5 Email Sequences You Must Have Before Opening Your Cart

You've spent months perfecting your signature offer, building out your course modules, and designing a beautiful sales page. But when launch day arrives and you finally open the cart, the results are... underwhelming.
If this sounds familiar, the problem usually isn't your product—it's your communication strategy. Many creators make the mistake of relying solely on "cart open" emails to drive sales, completely neglecting the crucial warm-up phase.
To generate consistent, high-ticket sales, you need a strategic email ecosystem. Here are the five email sequences you absolutely must have in place before you ever ask your audience to buy. (Or, if you want to skip writing these entirely, check out our Done-For-You Sales System where my team writes and builds this for you).
1. The Welcome & Nurture Sequence
When a new subscriber joins your list—whether through a lead magnet or a general opt-in—they are at their highest level of engagement. This is your prime opportunity to introduce yourself and establish authority.
A high-converting welcome sequence should:
- Deliver the promised freebie immediately.
- Share your origin story and the "why" behind your business.
- Provide unexpected, high-value quick wins to build trust.
- Set expectations for how often you'll email them and what value they'll receive.

You should never surprise your audience with a pitch. The pre-launch runway sequence (typically sent 2-4 weeks before cart open) is designed to agitate the problem your course solves and build anticipation.
During this phase, you are not selling the product; you are selling the concept and the solution. Share case studies, bust common industry myths, and invite them to your conversion event (like a webinar or challenge).
3. The Conversion Event Follow-Up Sequence
If you host a 5-Day Challenge or a masterclass, the emails you send during and immediately after the event are critical. These emails need to recap the value delivered, handle objections, and clearly present your signature offer as the logical next step.

4. The Cart Open & Close Sequence
This is the sequence most people are familiar with. It starts with the "Cart is Open" announcement and ends with the "Cart is Closing" urgency emails.
A strong cart sequence should include:
- A logical breakdown of the offer and its value.
- An emotional appeal focusing on the transformation.
- A dedicated FAQ email addressing the biggest objections.
- Urgency emails on the final day (often multiple emails).
5. The Abandoned Cart Sequence
If someone makes it to your checkout page but doesn't complete the purchase, they are incredibly warm leads. An automated abandoned cart sequence can recover 10-20% of these lost sales.
Keep these emails helpful rather than pushy. Ask if they experienced a technical issue, remind them of your guarantee, and offer a way to get their questions answered (like a quick chat or email reply).
Automate and Scale
Writing and scheduling these sequences can feel overwhelming, but the beauty is that once they are built, they work for you automatically. By using a powerful all-in-one platform (which is why we highly recommend our Visionary Edge Platform), you can seamlessly trigger these sequences based on user behavior, ensuring the right message reaches the right person at the right time.
